July Newsletter

Posted on July 15, 2022 | by admin

Forthcoming Events

The popular Iain Campbell Memorial Scramble returns this weekend -Saturday 16th July, with a two person competition for both Ladies, Gents or indeed a mixed paring returning as part of the annual fixtures. A shotgun start is planned for 9:30am. Participants can enter via the SG App, both names are required. Full competition rules are available once registered on the Rules tab attached to the Entry field. Entry fee £2.50 per person.

Medal Sponsors Sunday 17th July

Sunday the 17th July is set aside for the Monthly Medal and thanks again goes to those that have sponsored both Ladies and Gents events.

The Ladies competition is sponsored by club member Jonathon MacKinnon courtesy of JCM Plumbing, based at Kyleakin whilst the Gents competition takes a memorial format with thanks to Nicky Deighton who has kindly sponsored the Gents event in a kind gesture in memory of her father Dr Frank Deighton who played a very important part in developing the course and who’s legacy is steeped in the club’s history. Thanks to Nicky for her donation as sponsor. Its perhaps fitting that the Ian Campbell connection and the history of Dr Deighton are both linked through this weekend’s competitions. (see link on history)

Craig Lee and Junior Assistance in Association with Compass Building & Construction

Craig Lee will return to IOSGC on 23rd July. New members may wish to take the opportunity to join Craig through one of his orgasised training classes or by booking direct with Craig on mob. 07725 630583. Craig is also available for adult lessons, junior coaching and general advice of all golfing issues. Craig’s Newsletter will follow nearer the time.

The Committee would also like to hear from anyone who would like to get involved in Junior classes by giving up their time to assist with coaching and even take things forward by attending a training course that would see a succesful individual obtain the appropriate qualifications for the purpose of coaching. Please email the club direct if you require further information.

Familiar Return to international guests

The VMS booking system at Isle of Skye Golf Club illustrates a return of both International and European guests back playing at the Club. After several years of the pandemic it is a welcomed return to see guests from USA, Europe and Australia and New Zealand playing the course and a welcomed return of valuable income which had been missing in past years. The visitors book has made a return to the clubhouse reception where visitors are again adding comment on the course.

Thanks to the Stewards who have given some coverage to the weekdays and to those that have found time to provide some weekend cover. Going forward the Committee would be delighted to hear of anyone – member or non-member who would be interested in providing a day or several days coverage, adding to the team. We will require further hours to be covered later in the season. Those observant amongst you will notice that the Club has installed a new ipad to replace the old till that is no longer in use. The ipad connects directly to an online account and has a full remote reporting system which allows for daily, weekly, purchase reports and moves the club forward in terms of a financing tool.

Training Session

A training session based around using the club Defibrillator took place in June thanks to club member Ray Latham and Scottish Ambulance colleagues. The session was attended by Stewards, members and committee. We extend our thanks to Ray and the team for giving up their time with the demonstration and training provided.

UHI Acceptance for Skye golfer

Congratulations go to Archie MasAskill who now follows his brother Ryan in achieving entry for the UHI Golf academy based at Dornoch. This is a great achievement for the Club to have two members attending the UHI and demonstrates the opportunities available to other youngsters seeking to take up the sport based in the Highlands. Archie will begin his studies at Elmwood before continuing his studies at Dornoch

We wish Archie all the best going forward with his career.

USA Visitors

The Club recently played host to one of our overseas member Jeff Johnson who visited Isle of Skye wiith his wife Claudia. Jeff and his wife live in Medina Ohio, a location that needs no introduction to golfers throughout the world.

A fun 9 holes event was organised with Donald Bethune taking victory with the best stableford score putting Europe back on the winning podium ahead of the USA. Thanks to both Jeff and Claudia for taking time to visit and for their associated friendship.

Around the Greens

It has been a busy few weeks with several of the main annual competitions taking place despite the poor weather. Thanks to John Cunningham who has literally battled against the elements to provide excellent course conditions for all the events and for giving up his personal time to work around tee-times. Our added thanks to Calum Beaton who’s input is beginning to show on the course.

John himself competed in the Hebridean Distillery IOSGC Open loosing out by one stroke to his brother

The greens are currently being cut at 3.5mm, the lowest cut and most common at this point of the season. The Club recently purchased a master gauge which is an accuracy tool that is used to determine the blade heights and can be adjusted accordingly by placing the bar over the front and rear rollers with the measuring rod placed onto the lip of the bed knife.

The item is the best height of cut gauge currently on the market.

Recent Winners

Congratulations to all those who have recently triumphed in Competitions. Those of you winning vouchers should receive your prizes in due course. All Club results are published on this website (see link)

As part of an article requested by Golf Highland, John Marshall looked back on the history of our Open (see link).

Added thanks to everyone as volunteers for helping in schedule all these events as well as providing catering.

Vacancy Advert – Club Steward

There remains a vacancy for a club steward to work as part of our current team. The post is flexible in hours to suit an interested individual. Some weekend work is preferred along with an occasional weekday. Roles include meet and greet visitors/members, booking tee-times, clubhouse cleaning, club-hire and light catering teas and coffees to be served. IT training will be given.

Should you be interested in the post please email us at IOSGCvacancy@gmail.com for further details.

AGM Update and New Office bearers required

As a result of the 2021 AGM proposal the 2022 AGM shall take place on Thursday 6th October. Further details will follow nearer the time in accordance with notifying members from the constitution. By moving the AGM date it is hoped that the new committee will have some more time to plan through the winter months ahead of a new seasoon from October rather than December as was previous.

Several Committee posts will be required to be filled including Captain, Treasurer and several general Committee roles. Members are asked to consider whether they can commit to being part of the Club’s committee and help by taking up the posts both in the Executive and in the main Committee vacancies, or indeed simply as a non-committee volunteer helping out with any aspect of running the club.
